'Operation Care for Veterans'

Nov 5, 2018 09:00 AM to Nov 9, 2018 04:00 PM

Melcher-Sowers heads up ‘Operation Care for Veterans’

Piqua- Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua, will honor Veterans by participating in our 11th annual “Operation Care for Veterans,” Nov. 5th – 9th, 2018.

“It is our great pleasure to be able to say thank you to our Veterans in such a special way,” said Brian Sowers, funeral director at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home. “We can never repay what they have done for us, but we can show our appreciation in this small way.”

Each year on November 11th, Americans throughout the world commemorate Veterans Day, a day set aside to thank our nation’s veterans for service given and sacrifices made to protect the freedoms of our great nation.

This year we are going to do something a little different. In talking with the Dayton VA Hospital, they stated they had a greater need for new sweat pants, sweat shirts, t-shirts, underwear and socks in sizes XL-5X. They also need personal hygiene items in all sizes to include deodorant, bodywash, shampoo, shaving cream, body lotion, toothpaste, as well as toothbrushes, denture adhesive and cleaner, lip balm, brushes, combs, nail clippers, emery boards and razors. For more information please check out our Face Book Page at Melcher Sowers Funeral Home. “Operation Care for Veterans,” is a unique way to honor these heroes. Beginning Monday, November 5th through Friday, November 9th, nearly 1,000 VFMV Providers in 49 states will be donating to Veterans in VA hospitals or Veterans homes nationwide.

The date for the promotion has historic significance: November 11th is the anniversary of the Armistice signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918. At 5 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 1918 the Germans signed the Armistice, an order was issued for all firing to cease, bringing the hostilities of the First World War to an end.

Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, 646 West High St., is the area’s official Operation Care for Veterans collection center. Area residents may drop off items to be donated to the Dayton Veterans Administration Hospital and home.

Collection hours are from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday, November 5th through Friday November 9th.

(Additional items that can be donated are: big print word search, arts and crafts supplies or gift cards to craft stores, $20.00 gas cards for stranded veterans $20 - $100 grocery cards - emergent Veteran needs, bus tokens for stranded veterans, Walmart gift cards for long term Veteran residents, chess-checkers-dominoes sets, horse shoe sets, boxed drinks and individually wrapped snacks for the Specialty Clinic, phone cards)

Wreaths Across America

Dec 15, 2018 10:00 AM

Saturday December 15th 2018 is Wreaths Across America Day. WAA began as The Arlington Wreath project started by Morrill Worcester in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. It was relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet.  The project received National attention. In 2006 over 150 State & National cemeteries held wreath laying ceremonies simultaneously. By 2008 over 300 locations held wreath laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico and 24 overseas cemeteries. Over 100,000 wreaths were placed on veteran’s graves. Over 60,000 volunteers participated.

This year our goal is to adorn every veteran’s grave in all veteran’s sections in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, OH. This is made possible through the efforts of Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua, OH in conjunction with the Piqua American Legion Post #184, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Piqua Veterans of Foreign War Post #4874, the VFW Auxiliary and the Korean War Veterans Association Western Ohio Chapter. The Blue Jays Youth Group of Bethel United Methodist Church, Piqua Kiwanis Key Club, Boy Scout Troop # 295 and Girl Scout Troop 30006, as well as other members of the community will assist with the laying of the wreaths.

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 A.M. at Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua with prayers and the blessing of the wreaths led by Pastor Maggie Sykes. The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad will be giving a salute with a Volley of 3. They will place a wreath on each branch of the service at the monument. This year we will also place Veterans wreaths at Rossville Cemetery in PIqua.

WAA reaches out to thousands of children each year with the message of Remember, Honor and Teach.  The importance of honoring each fallen serviceman/woman as an individual is stressed. This year the wreath laying will be on the third Saturday of December and was unanimously voted by the US Congress as “Wreaths Across America™ Day”. By offering sponsorships to the public, Wreaths Across America hopes that one day every veteran’s resting place will be adorned with a wreath for the holiday season.

Our funeral home is honored to be the official local sponsor for Wreaths Across America, as well as a member of the Veterans & Family Memorial Care.

You may honor your hero, and any other veterans by sponsoring a $15 Wreath to adorn their grave. Please stop in and order a wreath for your hero at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, 646 W. High St. Piqua, OH from now until November 30th. 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday. Wreaths will be available for pickup by Friday December 14, 2018 at the funeral home. Easter Baskets of Love

Mar 13, 2019 09:00 AM to Apr 5, 2019 04:30 PM

It has been laid upon our hearts for the fifth year, we at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home want to make Easter a special time for the kids in the hospital at Children’s Medical Center in Dayton and the needy children in our own community of Piqua.  At Christmas time the kids in the hospital and the needy children are remembered throughout the area but they also need our love, support and donations at Easter; therefore, we are filling Easter baskets and delivering them to infants, children and teenagers in the hospital and to needy children in Piqua.

Last year the response was overwhelming and we are asking the community of Piqua to assist us again in our “Easter Baskets of Love” for these children.  There are two ways that a person or business can participate in our mission.  First, you can make a monetary donation at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, 646 W. High Street, Piqua, and we will buy the items, fill the Easter baskets and deliver them to the children.  Or you can visit Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home Facebook Page and review the list of recommended items (i.e. matchbox cars, nail polish, coloring books, crayons, baby toys, infant rattlers and teethers, (no pacifiers), small hand held games such as checkers, playing cards, word search books and board books, crossword puzzles and Sudoku etc.) Please, no candy items due to medical issues.  Pick up the items you wish to donate on your next shopping trip, and drop them off at 646 W. High Street, Piqua, by Monday April 5, 2019.  We will fill the Easter baskets for you and deliver them.  We are also inserting in each basket a “God Knows My Name” pamphlet that they can read which will lift them up spiritually in their time of need. Also, we will be inserting a wooden hand carved toy car, by local woodcarver Jim Foster and the Shelby Woodcarvers Guild which they will provide through their special project “Toys for God’s Kids”.

Let’s help improve the spirits and souls of the kids at Children’s while they are going through the medical issues they are experiencing and allow the needy children of Piqua to know their community loves them by donating an Easter basket filled with gifts for them.  We are excited to involve the community, Washington and Springcreek Primary schools, Piqua Kiwanis Builders Club, Bethel United Methodist Church and Snyder Road Church of God to help with this project.

If you have any questions or need any further information, please feel free to call and speak with anyone at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home at 937-773-1647.  Thank you!
