Obituary for Rev. Fr. Angelo C. Caserta

THE REV. FR. ANGELO C. CASERTA, age 100, of Piqua, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Sunday May 12, 2019 at 8:00 A.M. in his residence surrounded by his loving and caring family. He was born in Piqua, Ohio on December 5, 1918 to Italian immigrant parents, the late Carmelo (Charles) and Nunziatina (Nancy) Cipriano Caserta.

Father Caserta was the oldest surviving priest in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Surviving are two brothers: Rev. Fr. Charles Caserta, of Troy; William W. Caserta of Piqua; one sister: Amelia Gillis of Piqua; one sister-in-law: Barbara Caserta of Piqua and forty-three nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers: C. Anthony, Vincent, Bert, Joseph and Thomas Caserta and three sisters: Eleanor Johnston, Rose Tyler and Virginia Marsili.

Fr. Caserta attended Piqua Catholic Schools and graduated from Piqua Catholic High School in May of 1936. Upon graduation, he entered St. Gregory Seminary and was ordained from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary on February 24, 1945. During his entire priestly life, he has been engaged in educational pursuits both as a student and as an educator.

Fr. Caserta’s first assignment was as Associate Pastor at St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Bridgetown, Ohio during which time he also served on the faculty at Elder High School. He was sent to Rome, where he received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Angelicum, and pursued other graduate studies at Xavier University where he received a Master Degree in Education. He served as Academic Dean and Vice-Rector of St. Gregory Seminary of the Athenaeum of Ohio, and later as Treasurer and Dean of Student Affairs at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary. On June 9, 1970 he became Pastor of St. Lawrence Church and School in Cincinnati, where he served fourteen years. He was then assigned to serve as Pastor of his beloved home parish of St. Boniface Church and School, Piqua on August 7, 1984, retiring August 8, 1993, after nine years. He had continued to assist with pastoral duties at St. Boniface and St. Mary’s parishes since his retirement. St. Lawrence and St. Boniface parishes benefited greatly from his dedication to their needs; both underwent expansion of their physical plants by adding new classrooms, activity centers, and gymnasiums by means of capital improvement campaigns.

Fr. Caserta was well known for his promotion of education for students from any financial background, and successfully achieved a no-tuition policy for the grade schools he served. He established student assistance funds, and enjoyed perfecting his own fundraiser, a recipe for pasta sauce, that he produced and sold at festivals, and for some time commercially. The profits were used to assist with the educational needs of children from both public and parochial schools.

Fr. Caserta celebrated his 100th birthday with his family on December 5, 2018 and he has been a special inspiration to us all. Not only was he known as a great counselor to those seeking personal advice, but he was committed to the more ordinary parish tasks, as well. It was a common sight to observe him roll up his sleeves and work alongside his parishioners, preparing a festival dinner, greeting patrons at bingo, or cooking literally hundreds of meals for parish committees and church volunteers. He truly gave his all, and when advised he should get a little more rest, he is quoted as saying: “When I go before God on my last day, I simply want to say, ‘Lord, with your help, I have done the very best I could for you.’”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday May 21, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Piqua, Ohio with The Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Presider and The Rev. Charles W. Caserta, brother, The Rev. Edward Shine, The Rev. Daniel P. Hunt, The Rev. Thomas Bolte, The Rev.
